Sandy Rubuye is a current intern at PURE 1. She is an international student from the Democratic Republic of the Congo majoring in Sociology at the University of San Francisco. At USF, Sandy took a criminology class that opened her eyes to the United States’ criminal justice system and its effects on the lives of many Americans. Consequently, when Sandy was looking for an internship site for a class requirement, she was interested in the work done by the San Francisco Black and Jewish Coalition, a non-profit organization dedicated to racial justice and equality in the criminal justice system. It is through the canal of the organization that Sandy was introduced to PURE 1. She was inspired by PURE 1 remarkable work for formerly incarcerated folks and wanted to contribute as much as possible.
