SUCCESS STORIES: Turning Tragedy Into Triumph!

Purpose:

Tough on crime narratives and negative messaging towards those who have been within the criminal justice system have been used to justify decades of injustices. We seek to reshape this narrative by shedding light on our shared humanity through sharing our stories of success.

70 million Americans, or 1 in 3 adults, have a criminal record. And contrary to what we see in the media, the vast majority are not “hardened criminals” whose only desire is to hurt and prey upon others. Rather, we are mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, and every day people who have the same wants and needs as everyone else. Similar to those who do not have a criminal record we also want to be able to provide for our children, have meaningful employment, own a home and be able to be successful. But the way certain things have been set up, being able to attain these common wants becomes extremely difficult. And the false narratives which continue to influence people’s perceptions only make success more difficult.

To help us dispel myths and reshape the narrative we are calling on our Community Members to share their stories of success. But what does “success” look like? The simple answer is that success looks different to different people. For one person it may be getting the keys to their first apartment, while for another it’s successfully launching their own business. Regardless of what it looks like to you, every story counts. Any challenges you’ve been able to turn into a triumph is a success. And your story is instrumental in opening doors and changing the narrative.

So share your stories of success and help us begin reshaping the narrative!
